Prepping for this little adorable tot’s first birthday photoshoot, was what you could call…. interesting. For starters, I made my very first tutu (and backdrop banner), and I personally love how they turned out. It ended up being super easy, just time consuming. (To see how the tutu was made, there are tons of tutorials on youTube.) I designed the backdrop myself; pretty much all I did was cut pieces of tulle and string then onto fishing wire. Super Easy.
The next step in the prep was making the cake. We couldn’t buy one, as poor Rachel is allergic to pretty much everything imaginable. The easy part was the breading; It turned out nicely and I just popped it into the fridge the night before.
Day of, it was time for icing. This part felt like it took years, 1. for the icing to look like icing, 2. to make another batch that looked like icing again. It was first forming together as a liquidy, balled up sugar mess. We eventually got the mixture to look like icing, but, it ended up having a consistency more like fondant than a fluffy buttercream. I would love to figure out what we did wrong, if anyone knows how to make creamy icing with just coconut oil, water, and sugar.
As the icing was more like a hard fondant, you will notice, it is not quite as messy in the pictures as it could have been. Obviously, messy cake + messy baby= the cuteness point in cake smash photoshoots. 😉 All in all, I still think they turned out adorable.
Enjoy 🙂
